With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:10–11
In Psalm 119, the psalmist expresses great delight and joy in the law of God. This dominant theme extends throughout the entirety of this psalm. Never does the psalmist express complaint or drudgery in following God’s precepts. Rather, we find him continually rejoicing and proclaiming the benefits of God’s commandments.
As a result of the great joy and benefit of keeping God’s commandments, the psalmist seeks to continually walk in them. His desire above all is to please the God who gives rules and instructions for our benefit. So he pleads with God that he might not ever depart from His statutes.
In order to keep from straying, the psalmist seeks to store up and treasure God’s word in his heart. This indicates that the psalmist memorized, meditated, and read the law of God often and frequently. In this way, the psalmist would keep from straying into sin.
Similarly, the path the psalmist took is the same path that we must take. If we are to find true delight in God as we should we must treasure the word of God above all and seek to obey God who gives commandments for our good and His glory. This is the surest path to joy and delight.
