Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways, know him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (CSB)

Proverbs 3 is filled with Solomon’s wise instruction for a life defined by the fear of and love for the Lord. Verses 1-12 focus on a series of commands, followed by a blessing or positive result. We are told in verses five and six to trust in the Lord, not lean on our own understandings, and to know Him in all we do. As a result, the Lord will make our paths straight.

Straight paths refer not to easy life circumstances, earthly prosperity, or even a flashing sign that answers “yes or no” to all the questions we have about important life decisions. Straight paths reference a life that is defined by obedience and protection from sin.

When we trust the Lord with all of our heart, we are encouraged to turn away from fear and worry. We can trust that God can and will bring us through difficult circumstances and make us more like him. When we choose not to lean on our own understanding, we acknowledge that we don’t know it all.

We need God’s wisdom; our own knowledge is lacking, and we are encouraged to turn away from pride. When we know Him in all we do, we are oriented to a life of prayer and seeking God’s counsel, turning away from harmful self-reliance and independence.  As we strive to keep our eyes and hearts on the Lord, we can be confident that God will bring us through life on the straight path.  How amazing that God cares for us and keeps our ways straight!
