Scripture Memory Meditation | Isaiah 25:7-9

On this mountain he will swallow up the burial shroud, the shroud over all the peoples, the sheet covering all the nations. When he has swallowed up death once and for all, the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face and remove his people’s disgrace from the whole earth, for the LORD has spoken. On that day it will be said, “Look, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he has saved us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him. Let’s rejoice and be glad in his salvation.
Isaiah 25:7-9

Everyone knows intrinsically that there is something wrong and broken in this world. This problem is perhaps most evident as we witness and experience death in humanity. From natural disasters to murder, to car accidents, to tragic catastrophes, death is a powerful proof that things are not the way it should be.

We experience great sorrow when the life of a person we care about comes to an end. We desire his life and our own would be extended for all eternity. We fear the end and experience great dread and anxiety when we come in close proximity to life-threatening situations.  Outside of paradise, we encounter death at every turn.

Yet, within the human heart, there is a desire to be saved from this demise. A wish for someone or something to rise up to the occasion and rescue humanity from this evil. We create and imagine super-heroes with other-worldly powers to bring us this salvation. Our souls resonate with these stories and movies as we hope longingly.

While movies seek to instill hope for a certain kind of salvation many are ultimately baseless and foundationless. Death still wins, making void any true hope. But for the Christian, there is a solid foundation for hope!

In fact, Isaiah declares with certainty that God will one day rescue his people from death and destruction. For those who belong to God, there is the precious promise that death will be swallowed up, shame will be removed, and tears will be wiped away. There is the beautiful promise that God will undo all that went tragically wrong in the beginning. God is at work reversing the curse that fell upon humanity for our sin.

One day, we as God’s people will experience these promises and blessings finally and fully because of Jesus. Because Christ has conquered death we no longer have to fear it. He will rescue us. He will save us. And on that day we will worship him saying, “This is the Lord; we have waited for him. Let’s rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”
